MaryJane Fletcher is a freshman at GHS and is in her first year on The Voice Staff. She serves as a reporter. She is involved in journalism because she feels it is a great opportunity to improve upon her writing skills and become less shy. Her favorite thing to write about is psychology. Outside of journalism, she likes to develop fiction story ideas and tell bad jokes.

WINGS AND STUFF As a member of the Pro-Start class, junior Gavin Gragert’s food truck was called Wings and Stuff and featured fried pickles. “I messed up a little bit,”Gragert said “I breaded them yesterday and they sat out, so the breading soaked in. They won’t be as crispy.”

NEEDED NUISANCE Finals are given in high school to prepare students for college, where finals are more common. However, some students believe finals are unnecessary for certain classes. “I don’t think they’re always necessary for some classes,” freshman Liz Aure said. “I understand there’s a reason for them. I think some it’s not necessary because we’re bound to forget the minor details.”

OTHER ANIMALS When most people think of pets, the first animal that comes to mind is a dog. While this makes sense, as dogs are one of the most common pets, there are several other animals that would make great pets. “I would really like a cat,” sophomore Ellie Featherstone said. “I’ve always been a cat person or a rabbit person. I like my dog, but I’m not much of a dog person and I think it would be really fun to have another type of animal.”

PERIOD RED Pantone introduced a new red-hue color called Period to combat stigma about menstruation. The Pantone Color Institute worked with INTIMINA to create the color Period. The shade serves as the visual color identifier of the Seen + Heard campaign.

UNNECESSARY ATTENDANCE The ACT is a national standardized academic achievement test the state requires juniors to take. The PreACT is taken the year before to prepare students for the ACT. While sophomores took the PreACT and juniors took the ACT, freshman and seniors got an AI Day. “It’s honestly pretty good, just because a lot of the teachers, who I have personally, end up proctoring,” senior Chloe Ott said. “So it would be a lot of subs and I wouldn’t learn anything because they wouldn’t make lesson plans. Typically, they don’t make lesson plans for the day they proctor. I remember a couple years ago where I was just like, ‘are we just gonna sit here’ ‘yeah, you just sit here’ and that was every single class. So, making it so you don’t actually have to actually come in is a great way of handling it.”

TERRIBLE TEAMS While there are several benefits from playing sports, there are some negatives. One of these negatives could come up if a player isn’t in the most desirable team. “I think there are definitely more positive aspects to playing sports than there are negative,” head cross country and track coach Ms. Jessa Sughroue said. “Although, if you are part of a team with a negative culture or negative attitudes, playing sports could definitely be discouraging.”

A.S.A.P. Some students find it weird that class registration is not closer to the end of the year. However, there is a good reason for this. “We need to get the registration numbers as soon as possible because that determines how many staff we hire and in what areas,” principal Mr. Todd Mueller said. “If we don't have that information you cannot start the hiring process and would miss out on all the good available candidates.”

HAPPILY DOMESTIC Domesticated animals make great pets, not only because certain desired traits have been bred into them, but because they like being pets. If a domesticated animal has a good owner, then they can find their life as a pet fulfilling and happy. “She was born in captivity, so she doesn’t know how to survive on her own,” pet owner Cherisa Meyer-Fletcher said. “Dogs need love and encouragement. Before we had Oreo, she would get sad when Alyssa and Dylan would leave, they were her family. Domesticated animals make people their family. When we put her outside she chooses to come back in with us, she doesn’t choose to be outside.”

HOW MANY MORE Soon after the snow fell, the weather heated up again and started melting some of the snow. Even with the warmer weather, in Nebraska, it can be hard to predict whether it would be the last snow day. “It is impossible to say,” principal Mr. Todd Mueller said. “This winter has been very mild to this point so I wouldn't anticipate many more, but you never know with Nebraska weather.”
