Prom season is in full swing, and with it comes a change that causes excitement throughout the hallways at Gretna High School. After last year’s prom at CHI, the prom has been scheduled to move back to a previous venue at the SAC Museum on Saturday, April 18. With the theme being “Under the Stars,” the night promises to be exciting for the students attending, with a familiar place but a renewed theme to spark the night.
While the venue and the theme spark the excitement, it wouldn’t be possible without the work that is behind the scenes. Months of planning go into making prom a reality. This year marks the 18th year that Kari Bulgrin has organized and sponsored Gretna High School’s prom. From the beginning of the school yearto the last minute of prom, Bulgrin has dedicated hours to ensure that every detail is perfect for the attendees.
“I spend every minute of every day thinking about prom from February until it’s over,” Bulgrin said “It is always in my brain.”
Alongside the five juniors that have volunteered to help with the process she leads them through the process, such as choosing the theme and making the invitations and decorations. This year’s color scheme, to go along with the theme “Under the Stars,” will be silver and navy and will bring the theme and the venue to life.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with the prom king and queen coronation starting at 7:30 p.m.
Among the many traditions that students look forward to is the prom court coronation. At 7:30 p.m. (an hour after prom starts), the prom queens, kings, princesses and princes walk across the stage in order to claim their potential crowns. Harlee Boyd, a member of the prom court, is participating.
“I love seeing all of my friends walk across the stage dressed up and get their crowns,” Boyd says, “ It makes me so happy.”
Bulgrin said she likes to mix up the venues so that everyone gets different experiences for their two proms. Looking ahead, next year will be held at the Relevant Center in Elkhorn, which hosted this year’s Gretna East prom.
