Food shortages are an intractable issue to combat, and with the Thanksgiving season approaching quickly as well as the unfortunate news of EBT cards not being refilled for November, donations from the community are needed more than ever. Currently, the state of Nebraska is facing a historic level of food insecurity, with an estimated 290,000 adults and 91,000 children in our state having a tough time keeping food on the table. And according to the Food Bank for the Heartland, the problem is only predicted to get worse.
Gretna High School is at the forefront of trying to fix these problems by continuously donating to organizations across the city. The GHS Student Council is especially involved. From the Blood Drive with the Red Cross to our ongoing annual 2025 GHS Food Drive, student council members help provide Gretna with everything they need to live a happy, healthy, and not-so-hungry life. The food drive is actually led by the Student Council, which spends countless hours planning out exciting ways to help get the student body involved by developing themes and prizes. The food drive is now taking place through Thursday, Oct. 30, where students will be able to drop off their donations at designated tables by grade on the stage in the cafeteria.
Last year, the school donated more than 300 non-perishable goods to the Food Bank for the Heartland, and we’re striving to crush this goal!
“The food drive is always in need of canned foods, hygiene products or any foods with long-lasting shelf lives,” said student council sponsor Tyler Garder.
Each day this week will have a new, varying, and compelling theme, like Tortellini Tuesday and Thankful Thursday, for students to score points based on the items they provide. The grade with the most points at the end of the drive will be rewarded with a prize.
The Food Bank requests that all donations be non-perishable, shelf-stable items like peanut butter, canned chicken/tuna, pasta, and rice.
The donations from GHS can greatly impact the lives of the Gretna community.
