I believe that every child should have the opportunity to receive an education. I have lived in Nebraska my whole life, so I haven’t experienced anything but being forced to wake up in the morning and be in class by 8 a.m. And even though it begins to seem like a drag, and I count down the days until I have a day off, I have the luxury to say I attend a very great school. Not everyone has that same luxury. Some states and some countries don’t enforce school, which leads kids to not go to school or not be able to receive a proper education.
After I graduate in less than a year, I plan to go to college and work towards an elementary education degree. But not only do I believe strongly in the core essentials of education, I already practice this skill. I co-teach a second-grade religious education class at my church, and this has further made me believe in the importance of education. As a faithful Catholic, I believe these classes are essential because you learn the foundations and then build upon them as you grow older. But I believe this is more than just a Catholic classroom, I believe it in any classroom. Not everything you learn in school will be something you use in everyday life, but it does teach fundamentals. And, at in-person schools, the experience teaches needed social skills for the workplace. Now, telling a five-year-old to start preparing for college is a little much, but teaching those fundamentals to prepare them for the future isn’t too much.
Ever since I was a kid, I knew the importance of education, even when I begged my mom to call me out sick (which never happened). I was aware that the things I was being taught were necessary, and I wanted to teach them too. So I did. I’d kneel by the large, beat-up white board that I set on our sunroom floor, and I’d pick a color from the assortment of Expo markers and attempt to teach my little brothers something I knew that they didn’t know. I believed education was important, so I tried to start early. But third-grade me wasn’t magic, so I was only able to have class for roughly half an hour and then they were off to a very long recess.
As my brothers would likely agree, not everyone needs the experience to be in school extra (they were just lucky). Everyone should be educated, though. Through public school, private school or homeschooling, every child should be educated so they have the opportunity to reach the potential they all have and deserve.
