School spirit at Gretna High School has been running low for far too long—and it’s time we bring it back where it belongs: to the heart of our school day. As GHS Student Council president, I believe the best way to reignite our pride is by reintroducing pep rallies during school hours.
Before COVID-19, pep rallies were held during the school day. They weren’t just about sports; they were about celebrating everyone—students, teams, organizations and the pride of being a Dragon. Since the pandemic, that tradition has faded, and so has our energy. Rallies held after school just don’t carry the same spark. Attendance is low, the pep band can’t always participate and the excitement we once had feels missing. Meanwhile, schools around us continue to host theirs during the day, and the difference in spirit is clear. If they can do it, why can’t we?
Picture this: the gym packed with every student, the pep band blasting the fight song, and seniors running across the court waving GRETNA flags. The screen lights up with chants so everyone can join in, cheerleaders lead the crowd and students get their moment to shine—whether on a sports team, in the arts or through fun interactive games. It’s more than just noise; it’s energy, unity and pride.
The benefits go beyond one rally. When students feel connected, they get more involved. They join clubs, they show up for games and they put in the extra effort in class. A lively, inclusive pep rally can be the spark that motivates first-time involvement and makes every student feel like part of something bigger.
A group of student leaders has collaborated to form a plan to make this work without disrupting academics. The schedule mirrors our bus evacuation drill—adjusting AEP into third hour to carve out rally time. It’s simple, efficient and makes school spirit a priority instead of an afterthought.
Pep rallies are more than assemblies—they’re traditions that shape our culture. They unite us as one student body, build lasting memories, and remind us of the pride we share in being Dragons. It’s time to bring them back—louder, bolder, and more spirited than ever.
