Two journalism students, Avery Hansen and Harlee Boyd, have earned national recognition for their exceptional storytelling, each receiving a coveted Best of SNO (School Newspapers Online) award for articles they published in November.
The awards highlight exemplary student journalism from high schools across the country, recognizing stories that meet the highest standards of reporting, creativity, and engagement.
Avery Hansen: Capturing the Story of a Swiss Exchange Student
A junior at Gretna High, Hansen’s award-winning article, “New Places, New Experiences,” offers readers a glimpse into the life of Irina Walker, a Swiss exchange student adjusting to life in Nebraska. Hansen’s ability to bring Walker’s perspective to life earned her recognition, and the story can be read on the Dragons’ Tale website.
In addition to her success as a writer, Hansen is the social media coordinator for Gretna Media. Under her leadership, the program’s Instagram following has grown to over 1,600 followers, expanding the reach of student journalism across the community.
Harlee Boyd: Highlighting a Big Brother Contestant with Local Ties
Boyd, also a junior senior and one of the editors-in-chief for the Dragons’ Tale website, earned her Best of SNO award for a feature on a CBS “Big Brother” contestant with Nebraska roots. Boyd’s insightful reporting captured contestant Quinn Martin’s journey and connection to the state and showcased her ability to weave storytelling with regional relevance. The article is online at Quinn Martin’s 59 Days Of Living His Dream.
A Celebration of Student Journalism
The accomplishments of both Hansen and Boyd underscore the strength of Gretna High School’s journalism program. Both students’ stories have now been added to the Best of SNO archive, joining a distinguished collection of high school journalism from across the nation.
“These awards are a testament to the dedication and hard work of our student journalists,” said Tim Kaldahl, the journalism advisor at Gretna High. “Avery and Harlee’s stories represent the power of storytelling and the impact student journalism can have on our community.”
