“Gilmore Girls” may show us Lorelai and Rory Gilmore throughout all four seasons, however, you don’t think about the blooming flowers of spring or the hot, sandy beaches of summer while making your way through all 153 episodes. Instead, you picture the warm, autumn-inspired outfits Rory wears through her schooling at Chilton and Yale, as well as the leaves falling near the gazebo in the town square. The best way to make the most of this fall is by listening to the best songs, wearing cozy clothing, participating in sweater-weather activities and using “Gilmore Girls” as your inspiration.
Defining songs as “good” or deciding that one has a fall vibe to it can be subjective. However, songs like “Fade Into You” by Mazzy Star and “Reflecting Light” by Sam Phillips, both of which are in varying seasons of “Gilmore Girls”, will certainly allow you to feel like you’re sitting on a bench in “Stars Hollow.” Generally, most acoustic songs could be placed in this category, along with slow, melancholic ones that encourage you to sip hot chocolate and light a cinnamon-spiced vanilla candle from Bath and Body Works. Keeping a playlist with those songs, along with “Life Goes On” by The Sundays and “Landslide” by Stevie Nicks (or its cover by The Chicks) will definitely encourage you to feel like Rory when she’s driving home from Hartford.
Within Omaha and surrounding areas, there are several ways to evoke the feeling of fall. Here in Gretna, Vala’s Pumpkin Patch is a staple that many people go to every year. This year, they opened several rides and freshened up other experiences. I would recommend spending time at Harvest Barn Donuts and grabbing hot chocolate before starting your several hours-long journey through the maze and haunted house.
In “Gilmore Girls,” Rory and Lorelai spend countless nights sitting in their living room watching movies like “Casablanca” and “The Breakfast Club,” eating snacks and getting curled up in blankets. Having movie nights like this will tie together the perfect Autumn. “Little Women,” “Grease” and “10 Things I Hate About You” are just a few titles that, in my opinion, fit that category. Specifically, “10 Things I Hate About You” is an iconic film from around the same time period as “Gilmore Girls,” allowing the movie to present a similar fashion style and have the same heartwarming, cozy tone. Additionally, comedic/romantic storylines are very common in “Gilmore Girls” which develop throughout the show, similar to what the three earlier mentioned movies provide.
With every season, food and treats are a major part of establishing an autumn feeling. Lorelai and Rory are never found without a cup of coffee in their hand, so incorporating this with any variety of chocolate, pumpkin, hazelnut or other fall-ish flavors is the easiest way to start off autumn. Similar to how the Gilmore’s have no cooking talent, every Thanksgiving my family makes Pillsbury cinnamon rolls that can go straight into the oven to watch the Macy’s Day Parade. This or classic chocolate chip cookies can easily set the mood for a night of fall movies, music and bundled-up walks down the block.
