Extracurriculars for students are important, especially if they are looking for a place to make friends and get involved in their school and community. Student Council and Class Officers are two great examples of this. Both organizations help students get experience in leadership positions and become involved in the inner workings of student-led fundraisers and events.
The Class Officers team focuses on serving the students and staff of the school. Their main purpose is to guide students to classrooms during freshmen orientation, decide prom spirit week themes and organize pep rallies. Four students are selected from each grade level to represent their class. From there, students attend monthly meetings led by teachers Carly Mahoney and Kaitlyn Petr.
“The goal of Class Officers is to have a set group of students around the school that students know they turn to for help,” Mahoney said. “Whether that be at those events or just with anything,(they are) just kind of creating a positive attitude and atmosphere.”
Class Officers is just one example of a student-led organization that considers students when planning and creating events. The students involved with this group enjoy each activity that they plan and look forward to serving the community again. This year, the Class Officers have some big aspirations involving the pep rallies and prom spirit week.
“One hope for Class Officers this year is to convince Mr. Mueller and Mr. Lightle to move pep rallies during the day,” senior class officer Gavin Luthi said.
While the Class Officers from the senior, junior and sophomore classes have already been selected, they are searching for freshmen who want to represent their grade. Any students who may be interested are encouraged to visit Mahoney in Room 126 or Petr in Room 122 to collect an application or ask questions.
Student Council is another organization that aspires to create more student engagement through activities and boost school spirit. They mainly focus on homecoming, homecoming week themes, blood drives, food drives and pep rallies.
“My favorite event that we do is probably the blood drive,” junior Kelsey Van Waart said. “It’s just really cool to see everyone there working for a good cause. Sometimes it’s someone trying something new that scares them a little bit, too.”
The blood drive brings many students together from across GHS. Student Council may be doing three blood drives this year, instead of the normal two.
“We are working on a whole school shirt to create more school spirit,” senior Addison Schuka, the Student Council president, said. “We are planning on adding blood drives and possibly some sort of Christmas drive. We are also working to do more outside of the school service within Student Council.”
Student Council’s main goals are to create more student engagement through activities and school spirit and to be more involved with the school’s students and teachers. The group aims to be a voice for the students’ ideas and opinions on changes around the school.
