Since the beginning of the 2023-24 school year, the Drag ‘N Go area of the cafeteria had been temporarily closed due to staffing issues. However, with more staff hired at GHS, it is now officially reopened for students to once again get snacks, meals and drinks from. Lisa Richards is currently in charge of the Drag ‘N Go.
“With Gretna East opening this year, many qualified staff were placed there leaving us short handed,” Richards said. “Gretna High is the only school with two separate kitchens, therefore, we are in a unique position. If there is not enough staff to have both kitchens open, we can close one down to support the larger main kitchen lines.”
Now that the Drag ‘N Go is up and running once again, students are definitely using it. Many enjoy the decorations that staff put up for holidays.
“I’m super glad to see the Drag ‘N Go back, and everyone else loves it too,” sophomore Olivia Mendoza said. “I always see more people in there now that it’s open, more than in the other serving areas because it has a lot more options. It’s fun to see what they make of the space with all their decorations.”
The Drag ‘N Go area will be open for students to get various items during their lunch period. But some students are asking questions about the energy drinks that were sold last year that are not part of the options to purchase this year.
“Energy drinks… well, if it was up to me, we would still offer the drink selection we had last year. Unfortunately, it is not,” Richards said. “The food and nutrition department has contracts with distributors, and we need to adhere to those contracts. We have a contract with a new distributor for our beverage program this year and have yet to find a winning choice of drinks.”
Any student who has an idea for a snack or drink that is not already sold can suggest items to the Drag ‘N Go staff.
