For some students, summer means kicking back by the pool, soaking up the sun and enjoying not being in school. For those involved in the fall play, however, they did not get too much of a break because they dedicated at least 10 hours a week to perfecting the play, “Puffs.” The play opens this Friday.
The show is based on a seven-book series that most people are familiar with. The main character, Mr. Potter, lives in the dorm Hufflepuff, where the name of the play originated. The story focuses on a young wizard who is sent to Hogwarts Academy, but it is not set as a first-person narrative told by him. Instead, the story is explained by the people surrounding him.
“Puffs” is not just another production of the Gretna High School drama department. It is the first fall play the school has put together. With the future unknown about more fall plays, the students who participated in it are interested in having future fall productions.
Sophomore Miah Linquist said that there should be more shows because of the many productions other schools produce, and also because she said she enjoyed growing relationships with the small cast and creating a great show.
Introducing a new play to the school gives others who may not have as much time to be in the one- act or don’t enjoy singing in the musical to have a chance to be up on stage. This play is heavily filled with sophomores and juniors, giving them opportunities to express their talent and drama skills.
“We’re getting to feature people who maybe haven’t had that opportunity yet to be featured somewhere else,” director Caitie Hays said.
“Puffs” will be performed on Friday, Aug. 22, and Saturday, Aug. 23, at 7p.m. Tickets are for sale at https://gretnahigh.booktix.com/ or on the GHS Thespians Instagram page.
“I’m feeling really good about where we are at. We got to stay hungry and always keep working,” sophomore Sawyer Long said. Long plays Oliver Rivers in the show. “We can always improve and try to get it up to like a 12 out of 10, but I think it’s going to be great.”
